i think vince lombardi got it all right. "if winning isn't everything, why do we keep score?"
does this mean i have the right to feel like i have a right to win? i hate it when the game is over and people are like, well... it was fun! winning isn't everything... why are you playing then? don't play if you don't want to win! i want to win! i love my friends to death, but every team i am on with them never wins anything. i want to win.
sure. for putting that i will probably never get asked to be on a team again... or everyone will lash out at me. i just am a competitor at heart. i want to fight for something. that's why we play sports right? to compete. we love the challenge and having obstacles in the way. then coming down on those obstacles and feeling victorious. that is unless you never win. then you give up on sports altogether.
how do you live a life for God by losing? Jesus never lost. He conquered all obstacles in His way and continues to do so. in our battle for the side of our Lord we should never "play for fun" but we should go with a winning mindset. what glory goes to God if we just try and get by? just have fun? i don't think if you go to Hell you start to think.... "hmmm.... well it was fun right?"
dont get me wrong, i love winning. but for me, when it came to football, i liked to win the little battles. if i held my block for one play, i won that battle. if i hold it again the next play, i won that battle again.
ReplyDeleteif my team loses, and i won all of my personal battles, in my eyes ive won.
Jesus, in the world's eyes, lost just about every battle. He was run out of towns, he had to run and hide from the high priests, and he ended up getting betrayed and killed. but then he rose again. he lost those worldly battles, but won his own battles, they people he was fighting against just didnt realize what kind of war they were fighting.
i understand where you are coming from, but sports are meant to be fun for both sides, win or lose. you just have to have the right attitude coming into it.
when it comes to volleyball, if you hit every ball that comes to you, and you dont knock it out of bounds, you've won your battles. and its up to the rest of the team to win their battles for you to win the war. and if it ends up that you dont win the war, win the game, you still win inside.
and if everyone has that attitude, you will never lose.
kinda get what im going at?
Great comment by Ben. In addition to that, I would say balance is the key. I get really annoyed by the "guys let's just have fun!" type who don't keep score or care what happens, but I get just as annoyed at the people who are solely focused on besting the other team. Both are good and healthy for any kind of sport, and winning should be the goal, but there is no sense in doing something if you don't love doing it.
